Polynesian Cultural Center

The first couple of days were rough...

It isn't the paradise that everyone said that it would be. It has a few roads that are perticularly beautiful, the one that the temple is on and the one the school is on. Those roads are lined with palm trees, grassy field and tropical flowers. However, to get to these areas I have to travel down roads that are lined with garbage, kids running around barefoot and chickens pecking around at the ground.

Not only was it not what I had expected, but I was at my house for 3 days by myself until my roommates arrived. The first two, Haidy and Johana arrived first and are originally from Monterrey Mexico but recently moved to Dallas Texas with their family. The last girl (my roommate) arrived late the night before school started. Her name is Keakalina and is Tongan. It's so interesting, I had heard that this school is extremely multicultural... but I guess I didn't quite understand the extreme truth to that statement! We say a prayer to start each class and I can count the number of english prayers on one hand! It's a great experience and I'm starting to really love the people here. Speaking of caucasians being few in numbers around campus... one place I can ALWAYS count on there being ALOT of white people?! THE BEACH!

For part of the new student orientation they took us to the Polynesian Culture Center, man was that great!! It was so interesting to see the different cultures and how they do things. I was able to watch a Samoan climb a palm tree, extra loud drums from the Figians, and all the tongues hanging out with the New Zealand..ers. It was so cool!
Well, thats it for now... I'm not really liking the lay out of this one. I'll be posting another one soon to talk about my classes and the events of my weekend!

  1. Aww.. I'm sorry its not all you were expecting. But I'm sure that you are going to love it before you leave! And then miss it when you are gone. What a cool opportunity for you though to do this!!
