Some of the guys in our ward, including the bishop, talked about doing the Rexburg Rush triathlon. Dayne and I went back and forth about whether he should do it, it was 45 bucks and for two poor college students that's a lot! Finally we decided yeah why not, go for it, you will love it! Well Iwas right about that. Before I explain the race I want to share with you what happened the night before the race.
So the night before they had a big dinner for all of the participants and their families. The food was decent. I mainly enjoyed scouting out is competition and listening to all of the rules and transition recommendations. Afterwards we headed home for him to gather all of his equipment so we would be ready to head to the transition zones to set his stuff up bright and early. Well that's when we faced the first hurdle. Where was his running shoes? They were no where to be found! After tearing our house apart we realized he had left them on campus after one of his classes... And the lost and found was already closed for the weekend. We decided that wouldn't stop him so he got his old yardwork shoes out and prepared those instead. We scrambled off to bed so we could get up early.
The morning of I got him a good breakfast and we headed out. We got his transition stuff ready and headed to the entry area for the start of the race, that's when we hit the second hurdle, where did his swim cap go? Even now we still have no idea where it went. He found someone with an extra and gave it a whirl. Here he is posing before the race. Notice he is the only one without a wetsuit! Poor guy!
His first transition was a little slow but soon enough he hit the road for the biking portion on the race.
He did great at this transition... Minus forgetting to take off his helmet! Oops. Well at least he was protected if anything were to happen. And even when he realized he was wearing it a mile in he didn't ditch it like I would have done, he just ran with it like a football, what a trooper!
Unfortunately after this picture I had to head off to work so I didn't get to be there when he finished. He finished strong! Which is a miracle considering all of the hurdles. Did I mention he was the only one from the ward who actually followed through and actually did the triathlon? With zero training. He had a blast though and looks forward to doing many more in the future!
